At Relief Nursery we work every day to strengthen families and keep children safe. We have long witnessed firsthand the marginalization and disenfranchisement of children and families of color as a result of ingrained inequities in our society.

The COVID-19 health and economic crisis has exposed and exacerbated these inequities, leaving communities of color further from access to employment, housing, education, health services, mental health treatment and other support critical to their family’s stability.

And now, the recent and deeply disturbing events are casting yet an even harsher light on the injustice and indignities faced by our Black and Brown neighbors, and the fear with which they live.

We grieve the victims of senseless and arrogant crimes, and condemn the opportunistic violence that is diverting attention from what really matters – acknowledging, addressing and ending systemic racism and bias.

It is incomprehensible, but true, that children are growing up facing the trauma of racism every day.

Relief Nursery is deeply committed to supporting all children and families and partnering with communities of color. We will draw upon our roots as a strength-based organization to build on what unites us, to work hard to bring about the change we want to see in the world, and to do what is right.

We will continue to stand alongside families as they navigate a world many of us cannot even begin to comprehend.

We are committed to listen, to learn, and to act so that staff and all families of color experience Relief Nursery as a place where they are valued, respected and celebrated for what they bring to this world.

There could be no greater call to action than the health and safety of our children, and equal opportunity to social, emotional and economic prosperity for all.

Dear Relief Nursery friends,

Amidst the COVID-19 crisis, Relief Nursery has remained focused on our work of supporting Relief Nursery children and families. Nothing could be more important as already vulnerable families are facing unprecedented challenges which increase the risk to their children.

I am reaching out to assure you that we are doing all that we can, and to share details about Relief Nursery sites and services, and our plans for Main Event.

With the closure of schools and the increasing spread of the Coronavirus, Relief Nursery has suspended on-site Therapeutic Early Childhood Program classes and Outreach Respite indefinitely. All evening classes for parents, staff trainings, and agency tours have been suspended until further notice, as well.

Adapting to the new reality of social distancing has been a challenge for us at Relief Nursery. Personal engagement and face-to-face contact is a tenet of our agency, mission and programs.

Our teachers, home-visitors, parent educators, and Outreach team are still very busy, checking in with families frequently by phone and other electronic communication methods. Phone calls include things like helping parents create a schedule for the day, and FaceTime sessions for the children with their teacher. A highlight of the day for both.

Relief Nursery staff is also delivering food and diapers to families, as this is an urgent need. Deliveries and care packages include activity kits and books for the children.

We’ve written a grant to supplement our emergency fund which is used to help families cope with unforeseen financial and personal hardships.

While we are currently unable to accept donations of household items, clothing, and toys, we are accepting donations of non-perishable food , diapers and monetary support. Arrangements have been made for Relief Nursery staff to work from home whenever possible, however, management and development staff are often on-site and can receive donations.

Relief Nursery continues to receive daily updates from Lane County Public Health and we have an emergency plan in place should it be necessary to close our buildings completely. If we need to take this step, you will be notified immediately.

With the prolonged restriction of public gatherings, Relief Nursery is unable to host Main Event as originally planned. Our ever-flexible and solution-oriented Development team will not be deterred — we simply cannot fail the children. Main Event 2020 will be a Virtual Gala culminating on Saturday, April 25th.

This undertaking would not be possible without the selfless generosity of our loyal sponsors. To that end, we will host a celebratory gathering in their honor, tentatively scheduled on June 27th.  We envision a festive party, when it is safe for all to gather, with a few live and silent auction items and a report on our Virtual Gala. We look forward to sharing updates with you about these plans.

In closing, a Relief Nursery teacher/home visitor recently shared this thought with me, “I believe that this experience is causing stress and fear for many of us, but I truly believe it is also teaching us new things … we will reinvent ourselves and do things that we never thought we could do.”

From the entire Relief Nursery team, we share our hope that all stay well, and our gratitude for this generous and resilient community.

November 30, 2020

As we head into 2021, many in our community are choosing optimism over fear. This year, we have been truly inspired at Relief Nursery by the selfless generosity and support of programs that have literally been a lifeline to families hit hard by the COVID health and economic crisis. And so, at Relief Nursery, we have good reason to remain optimistic and hopeful.

We’ve seen how your kindness helps parents draw on their resilience, and build on the power that springs from the love for their children. It is true that unknown strength can be found in the face of adversity.

Still, the ever-changing landscape of this past year has made serving Relief Nursery families a challenge – at the very time they need us most.

We have witnessed the disproportionate impact of this crisis on our already vulnerable families. We’ve seen an increase in substance abuse, domestic violence and punitive parenting practices.

As is so often the case, it is the children who bear the brunt of stress and adversity. This is why it is urgent that we do everything we can to support these families.

Just last month, the Relief Nursery team made 864 calls to parents. Over the course of six weeks, we provided 91 respite child care sessions at just one site. These efforts are rewarded every day by the children and families we serve – by the strides they make and the hardships they overcome.

We want to share with you inspiring messages from families that illustrate the importance and significance of your gifts to Relief Nursery.

  • I will say it very simply . . . Miss Paula and the Relief Nursery have saved our lives. My children are only four years old. They have seen far more than they should have. My kids and I have been homeless, hungry and often times full of fear. Thanks to the support of the Relief Nursery, we have a home and some form of stability. It is difficult to explain. The services and support that the Relief Nursery provides goes one step further than any other form of helping in that they know us and they understand our needs. They know my children. Miss Paula has gone above and beyond for these kids to ensure they are safe and nurtured. She supports me and guides me well. The entire staff at Relief Nursery has placed gentle hands around our lives to help us bridge between turmoil and safety.”
  • Thank you Barbara for the support given to my kids, they adore you. I attended Parenting Classes and I feel they helped me grow as a mother. Thank you Relief Nursery, I connected with other parents and my kids made friendships that are strong till this day. I have no words to express how thankful I am, for allowing me to belong to the extended Relief Nursery family.”
  • “ This year has been difficult with a lot of changes. So grateful Relief Nursery continues to support me through COVID and be a consistent resource for me and my son. Other resources in the area have closed their doors. Relief Nursery has given us consistent stable services during unstable times. Thank you for giving us HOPE and CARING about us!”

As you can imagine the impact of serving these children and families is profound for Relief Nursery staff. We’ve been providing fresh food boxes and pantry staples along with basic needs such as diapers, feminine hygiene products and laundry soap. We’ve assisted with rent and utility support so our families can stay in their homes. We’ve found new ways to connect and provide recovery and mental health support for the children and families. In doing all this, we are building trusting relationships and supporting families to resiliency – from the small steps to the big victories and changes that lead to stability. This is what drives our staff.

No one knows how COVID and other challenges will continue to impact our families over time.

The outlook for Relief Nursery children and families remains uncertain.

What is certain, however, is that Relief Nursery will be here to support these children and families in any way we can. We can’t solve every problem but we are trying every day. Your support makes this possible. By working together, we are making a difference.

And so, this is a time of great need and gratitude. Great need as the safety of children is our most pressing concern. And gratitude for the hopes and dreams and the chance that Relief Nursery children have to fulfill their potential. As you consider your year-end giving, please know that Relief Nursery needs your support. Your gifts are deeply appreciated and carefully stewarded.

Gratefully,
